Halfway round the world and back....

I give up! This picture totally refuses to move into it's correct spot.... But I really like these 2 so I will let them misbehave. We attended Garrett and Sarah's wedding reception in Milwaukee.
Actually, we were at least halfway across this great country and back.  Although we flew to Wisconsin (make sure to say that with a very strong "on" sound so everyone here will make fun of your accent) we drove back. 2400 miles pulling our camper over the plains, through the wheat fields, up and down the mountains, through the barren desert, and finally reached the Pacific coastline. This blog post is all about what we did during those 3 1/2 weeks in case you were wondering....
Took a trip down memory lane.... this is the house my dad built before I was born.  I lived there all of my growing up years.
My sister Karen and her hubby Ray and their family. Doesn't everyone take family photos in a cemetery? It was a glorious sunny day when we buried our dear mother and we were inspired to make some photo memories since we are scattered all over now: WI, FL, CA and KS. My sister Karen has been with me through all the challenges of aging parents. I couldn't have done it without her. We agreed on all the decisions we had to make for our parents. Love you sis!
The entire clan.

Grandkids and spouses and the only great grand baby Mikayla! She is so adorable AND advanced that she counts for more than one great!
We lined up in birth order... Keith, Karen, Kevin, Kristi. Yes our parents (our dog) never called us the right name-especially my dad- he would even throw "Smudge" in the mix!

Now we are back to Garrett and Sarah's reception... a lovely group of young ladies that all hold special places in my heart.

And a group of fine young men that mean a lot to us! Not sure about that Georgian cowboy though!

3 of my double first cousins. They are like siblings to me since our dads were brothers and our moms were sisters and we grew up a few miles apart.

A very special friend/cousin/sister/confidant.... she wasn't too sure about this picture but since we both had our eyes open for once  it isn't too bad.

I got to attend a girl baby shower for Leslie- one of our boys surrogate sisters.

We stayed with our Korean "relatives" too :)  And listened to a violin recital. Violin music has never been a favorite of mine but the violinists were adorable! 6 year old Minzie.

And 3 year old Minah- who is quite casual about this violin business and drops it on the floor and smiles!

Great water fight on a hot humid 95 degree day in Wisconsin.

Went to visit Dave's mom in Illinois- this is when our 1 night at every place started...

On to Chicago for Shane's award ceremony at Crystal Gardens at Navy Pier.

Shane's classmates that also received awards

Here is Nikelle who deserves the "I stood by my man award" She patiently endured  many days and nights of an absent in body or mind husband. They set a goal and accomplished it together.

The support team. Randy and Brenda (Nikelle's parents) came from Colorado for the main event.

Navy Pier on a rainy day.

Graduation was at the Civic Opera House in Chicago.

The graduate!

Aww....

Shane graduated as an RN in 2008, worked 1 1/2 years in an ICU at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Then they moved to North Chicago in Feb 2010 so he could attend Rosalind Franklin University to pursue a Master's Degree in Nurse Anesthesia. A very intense course of study for 27 months full time. 1 year later they moved to Waukesha,WI ( 2 miles from us) so he could travel to all his clinical sites. Now they will move to Berlin,WI where he will start his new job. And we hope Nikelle will finally be able to use her Elementary Education teaching degree once they settle down in one place for more than a year!

The family

The other family

Brothers and good friends!
Yeah!!!

We all stayed at Ananth and Amanda's home. More very special people in our life!

I realized how much I miss this! The 4 "brothers" being very random and hilarious!

We gathered up the last of our belongings from WI- the truck and camper . That is our former home in the background.

And said good bye again to our special neighbor, friend, and honorary grandma to our boys.

Attended the high school graduation picnic for these 7 graduates.

We headed out across this great country- stayed 1 night in IA, 1 night in NE with very special friends, Lynn and Jeanie. Discovered this historic place and actually paid to go in the museum. Did you know the pony express only operated for 19 months before the railroad put it out of business?

Yee ha!

Statue in the town square.

Stayed 1 night in Manhattan, KS where Tristan lives. Here he is entering his office- a work trailer at the Kansas State. Very proud of our Architect son :)

We got to snuggle with Chewy our grand chinchilla.

Great to be able to see where Tristan lives.

The breadbasket of the USA. Wheat, wheat, wheat.

Limbering up before getting on the road again.

Beautiful ? I-70

Now we are in Colorado!

Hiked on our 31st anniversary.

Another of my double first cousins, Lynette. Our gracious hostess and her hubby Scott put up with us for 2 nights. Then 1 night with our friend and co-in-laws, Randy and Brenda.

On the road to Hotchkiss,CO

One night at Hotchkiss Convention.

Ron and Jan ( cousins) who let us camp next to them. A brother to Lynette.

We left CO and found some beauty along the way.... not ready to go live here though! Utah, Arizona, Nevada all kind of blurred together!

Local color restaurant that was featured in National Geographic- I wouldn't go out of the way to eat there again...

Our last camping spot before home. Yes- a Walmart parking lot!

Yup you are in CA now- gold miners at the gas station. They even moved and talked about what snacks you should buy in the station.

Highway robbery! But when you are the only station for miles you can charge whatever you want.

What I did for hours on end. Dave was thankful because usually I sleep the entire trip.

What Dave did for hours on end.... So here we are home again in Fallbrook. It was wonderful to see everyone and hard to say goodbye again. I have to say we were both ready to be back in our place in sunny California! Y'all come see us now!

A great Dad that I know!

In honor of Father's Day I want to focus on the present and not the past.... so here is a wonderful father .  Dave has always been there for his sons through thick and thin, through good times and not such great times. He is a solid rock upon which they can depend. He is patient, wise, loving, humble and easily embarrassed so I best stop now!
He taught them so many things including the love of camping even when it is so cold that you have to wear a winter hat and long underwear!

Dave was there for Shane when he was born 8 weeks early ( preemie sleeper he wore home form the hospital).  He sat up nights with his sick boys.

Dave was a "grandpa" to our friend's children when they moved here from India.

Dave plays games with the kids even when they keep beating him.  He warmly welcomed this "daughter"  into our family when Shane fell in love with her. And anything Nikelle wants Dave gladly does!

Dave fully supported both of our son's decision to attend college.  Here is Tristan ( our Architect) explaining his project.

And encouraged Shane in his pursuit of even higher schooling.  Our Nurse Anesthetist.

Taught them how to grill!

Spent quality time with them.

Dave has worked steadily and hard all these years to support them. I know this doesn't look like work but he was working from the camper!

And like I said before- he will do anything for Nikelle including climbing trees!

Dave loved these boys even more as they grew into adults and called for advice on many subjects.

Dave put up with and even liked all the various pets that Tristan brought home.

Graduations are especially rewarding to the parents!

Last Father's Day- Shane was present only via photo!

Dave taught the boys how to nap any where, any time!

Dave instilled a love of hunting and fishing- especially in Tristan.

Supporting Shane in his running of a marathon.

Another Father's Day- with his lovely daughter!

Dave is an example to his sons in how to love and serve God.

Taught them how to cook over a fire....

And how to cook over the fire in the rain!

Another example of Dave's honorary "grandpa" abilities.

I could go on and on but you get the picture..... love you Dave!

MY MOTHER

I have a lot to tell you about since it has been over a month since my last post.... As most of you know my mother died on May 15th. She had been in assisted living since Nov 2002 and in the Memory Care unit for the last 3 years.  She just became more and more vague over the years.  She was mostly content, pleasant and pretty agreeable to whatever my sister and I suggested.  She had to give up a lot and accept many changes including the loss of her husband in Sept 2003. She became our child and quite dependent. She was an artist in her good years and still loved the art classes but her painting and drawings became childish also. She always had an eye for color and her clothes always matched but that all changed also. Even the memory of my father became more disjointed and she claimed to be married to someone who worked at her place.  We mourned the loss of our mother long before she actually died. Dementia is a cruel disease that robs a person of so much that death is a sweet release.  She was always so proud of her grandchildren and was very excited about the birth of a great grand daughter. Then there came the day that she had to be told over and over their names. We stopped taking her places because it caused her so much anxiety. The world became full of unknowns and people hat she had known for years became strangers to her.  There was one week when she didn't seem to know who I was and that was very painful. But the rest of the time Karen and I where her familiar people and she was always glad to see us.
I received a call from my sister on a Monday AM that Mom had fallen and was on her way to the hospital. She ended up going back to her place with her arm in a sling ( fractured humerus) and antibiotics for a urinary tract infection.  That next Saturday she crumpled to the floor again and back in the ambulance she went.  My sister called me that evening and said we had a tough decision to make.... Mom was septic and her lab values were all screwy. The decision was whether to treat all her problems or do comfort care only and let nature take it's course. We had decided long ago that there would be no heroic measures to preserve her body when her mind was so far gone. But when the moment actually came to put that decision into words it was harder than I thought it would be.  Through tears we agreed that this was Mom's only ticket to heaven and to be released from her failing body and mind. As nurses we knew we would only be delaying the inevitable. Who were we to try to keep her bound to this earth when what she had lived for was awaiting her? The official order for "palliative care" was written on Sunday ( Mother's Day). Worse Mother's Day ever- my mom was sick in WI and I was in CA away from all my children and my mother. I made plans to fly back- we were to leave on the 26th to be back for Shane's graduation from the Nurse Anesthetist program. I booked on the first flight out Tues AM.  Mom was moved to hospice on Monday afternoon and became comatose shortly thereafter.  It takes 2 flights to get from San Diego to Milwaukee and I was so hoping that I would make it home in time. Karen promised to keep telling mom that I was coming. Well it worked! I had 3 hours with mom before she died. Did she wait for me? I like to think so but I will never know. I was just so thankful to be by her side when she slipped from this world to eternity.  She gave me life so was there for my entry into this world and I was there as she exited this world. The circle of life. A life well lived. It is a strange feeling to be an orphan- the 2 people who gave me life and guided me through life are gone. A special thank you to all those who gave comfort in a hug or words and did so much for us....

My parents on their wedding day 66 years ago
After a very special funeral we buried her on a sunny day with the birds singing. Now she lies next to the man she married on June 20, 1946 soon after his return from WW II.  Karen tells me that some of her last coherent words were, "Ralph, Ralph! Come here quick!" I was fortunate to have warm, loving parents who taught me all the important things in life especially the love of God. And I give thanks...

"Feasting", fellowship and friendship in the desert

We just spent 4 wonderful days at Casa Grande, AZ convention. Those of my readers who attend conventions would know how we felt being there, truly a foretaste of heaven.  The natural food was tasty too: tacos, chicken chili, pasta, hot dogs, and of course stew! The setting left a bit to be desired.... I want to apologize for those of you who live in and love the desert....but we find it kind of ugly! Too dusty, brown, dry and HOT for our taste. But it was a wonderful haven. And to top it all off, we saw so many old friends and even several relatives. It was a blast from the past. Plus we made new friends- always expanding our horizons. I wish I had photos of all those old friends but I felt a bit like a stalker :) Here are a few...
Autumn and Alec- our buddies from MN who are now nomads with their  parents. They plan to settle somewhere soon!

Another of Alec because I couldn't resist. They call us their WI grandparents but that has changed now to their CA grandparents.

Their nomadic parents- Brendan and Kayla sitting in their new temporary home- a 28 foot trailer.

Looking toward the meeting shed- 2 inch dust!!
Sarah - used to live in WI near us and Carmen- a good friend of Nikelle's

My good friend Mary who knows all my past....she went to AZ temporarily about 29 years ago and never returned! I am excited to be only living about 6 hours from her. Dawn who surprised me by flying in for the weekend form WI. And her sister Rhonda who also left for AZ years ago.

My cousin Karlan and his son Aaron

Brad, Candace and  cutie pie AJ . Candace is Dave's cousin.

Charlie - Nikelle's grandpa

We were the photographers for this family photo. A wonderful group with roots in WI and IL but they now represent TX and CA
My "daughter" Ahalya

It was great to get chat a lot with my twin cousins- Karlan and Arlan. I can even tell them apart now!

Please don't tell Chad that I posted a picture of him.... but they are too cute not to share!

Here is the scenery from our trip home- first the saguaro cacti

Then we stopped in Yuma for supper with this sweet couple- Dave's aunt and uncle

Next came the sand dunes...

That fence is the border of Mexico!!! We passed through 3 checkpoints on the way home. Luckily the questions weren't too difficult, "Are you both American citizens?" At one checkpoint he just looked at us and waved us through!

Finally over the mountains and back to nice cool San Diego. Dave did enjoy coasting at 102 mph down the slope!! Luckily he stopped before we hit the border patrol car!! So we had good days, a safe trip and memories to last a lifetime!
